# All settings

Every UniGetUI setting in one place, grouped by settings page, with what it does and the platforms where it's available.

This page lists every setting in ***Settings***, grouped by settings page in the order they appear in the app. To jump to a setting in UniGetUI, type part of its name in the ***Search settings*** box of the title bar.

* **Platform**: ***All*** means Windows, macOS and Linux. A setting that's not available on your platform is hidden.
* **Restart required**: some settings only apply after a restart. UniGetUI then shows ***Restart UniGetUI to fully apply changes*** with a ***Restart UniGetUI*** button.
* Toggles that say "Do not…" or "Disable…" in their name work as written: turning them on turns the feature off.

{% hint style="info" %}
You can also read and change most settings from a script with the [command-line interface](/unigetui/reference/cli.md#settings): `unigetui settings list` shows the internal keys.
{% endhint %}

## General preferences

Language, UniGetUI updates, telemetry, privacy, and import, export or reset of the settings.

### Language

### Rendering

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Automatically switch to software rendering when Windows has no hardware GPU</strong></em></td><td>Uses software rendering on computers without a graphics card, such as some virtual machines. Restart required.</td><td>Windows</td></tr></tbody></table>

### UniGetUI on the background and system tray

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Close UniGetUI to the system tray</strong></em></td><td>Keeps UniGetUI running in the notification area when you close the window. Notifications and scheduled tasks need UniGetUI to keep running.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Manage UniGetUI autostart behaviour</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Open</strong></em> opens the Windows startup apps settings, where you choose whether UniGetUI starts with Windows.</td><td>Windows</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Package lists

## Notification preferences

Which notifications UniGetUI shows.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Notifications need the system tray icon. If ***Close UniGetUI to the system tray*** is off, the page shows ***The system tray icon must be enabled in order for notifications to work*** and ***Enable UniGetUI notifications*** is locked.
{% endhint %}

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Enable UniGetUI notifications</strong></em></td><td>Turns all UniGetUI system notifications on or off.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Show an in-app summary toast when a batch of operations finishes</strong></em></td><td>Shows a summary inside the UniGetUI window when a group of operations is done.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Notification types

Unavailable while ***Enable UniGetUI notifications*** is off.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Show a notification when there are available updates</strong></em></td><td>Notifies you when new versions of installed packages are found.</td><td>Windows, macOS</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Show a silent notification when an operation is running</strong></em></td><td>Shows a notification without sound while an operation is in progress.</td><td>Windows, macOS</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Show a notification when an operation fails</strong></em></td><td>Notifies you when an install, update or uninstall fails.</td><td>Windows, macOS</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Show a notification when an operation finishes successfully</strong></em></td><td>Notifies you when an operation completes.</td><td>Windows, macOS</td></tr></tbody></table>

To silence update notifications for one package manager only, see ***Ignore packages from {package manager} when showing a notification about updates*** under [Package manager preferences](#package-manager-preferences).

## Administrator rights and other dangerous settings

Elevation behavior, the Devolutions Agent broker, and security restrictions. The page opens with a warning: most of these settings are off by default because they can weaken the security of the computer.

{% hint style="danger" %}
Change these settings only if you understand the consequences. To enforce them on managed computers, see [Lock down risky settings](/unigetui/for-it-teams/organization/restrict-settings.md).
{% endhint %}

### Change how operations request administrator rights

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Ask for administrator privileges once for each batch of operations</strong></em></td><td>Asks for elevation once for a group of operations started together, instead of once per operation.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Ask only once for administrator privileges</strong></em></td><td>Asks for elevation once and reuses it for the following operations.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Prohibit any kind of Elevation via UniGetUI Elevator or GSudo</strong></em></td><td>Never elevates. Any operation that can't elevate itself fails, and installing, updating or uninstalling as administrator doesn't work. The two options above are locked while this is on.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Delegate package operations to the Devolutions Agent broker</strong></em></td><td>Sends install, update and uninstall operations of supported package managers to the Devolutions Agent service instead of showing a UAC prompt. Operations fail unless the agent is installed and running. See <a href="/unigetui/for-it-teams/organization/devolutions-agent.md">Let users install approved apps without admin rights</a>.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Inspect active package broker policy</strong></em></td><td>Opens the <em><strong>Active package broker policy</strong></em> page, which checks whether Devolutions Agent is reachable and shows the policy enforced for package operations. From there, <em><strong>Edit the active policy</strong></em>, <em><strong>Create a new policy</strong></em> or <em><strong>Replace the active policy identity</strong></em>, when allowed.</td><td>Windows</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
With the Devolutions Agent broker there's no fallback to UAC: if the agent is unavailable or its policy denies the request, the operation fails.
{% endhint %}

### Restrictions on package operations

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Allow custom command-line arguments</strong></em></td><td>Lets you add custom install, update and uninstall arguments in a package's installation options. When it's on, the commands set in a package's installation options run before and after the package is installed, updated or uninstalled. When it's off, they're discarded.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Restrictions on package managers

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Allow changing the paths for package manager executables</strong></em></td><td>Lets you pick a different executable for each package manager in <a href="#package-manager-preferences">Package manager preferences</a>. Only import commands from bundles you trust. Only available when pre-install and post-install commands are allowed (see the toggle above).</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Package operation preferences

How install, update and uninstall operations run.

### Concurrency and execution

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Choose how many operations should be performed in parallel</strong></em></td><td>Maximum number of operations that run at the same time, from 1 to 100.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Clear successful operations from the operation list after a 5 second delay</strong></em></td><td>Removes successful operations from the operations panel automatically. Download operations aren't affected.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Try to kill the processes that refuse to close when requested to</strong></em></td><td>Forces apps to close when an installer asks them to and they don't respond. You may lose unsaved data.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Installer downloads

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Default location for downloaded installers</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Select</strong></em> picks the folder where installers are saved. <em><strong>Reset</strong></em> removes the custom folder and <em><strong>Open</strong></em> opens it.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Name of the downloaded installer files</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Name given by the publisher</strong></em>, <em><strong>Package name and version</strong></em>, <em><strong>Package identifier and version</strong></em>, or <em><strong>Name given by the publisher, followed by the version</strong></em>. ### Environment variables in custom install options

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Use %VARIABLE% syntax for environment variables in custom install arguments and locations</strong></em></td><td>By default, UniGetUI expands variables written as <code>&#x3C;VARIABLE></code> in custom arguments and install locations. Turn this on to use the Windows <code>%VARIABLE%</code> syntax instead. Folder names that contain a variable name, such as <code>%TEMP%</code>, may then be expanded unexpectedly.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Shortcut management

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Ask to delete desktop shortcuts created during an install or upgrade.</strong></em></td><td>After an operation creates new desktop shortcuts, asks whether to delete them. <em><strong>Manage shortcuts</strong></em> opens the list of known desktop shortcuts.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Ask about the Start Menu shortcuts created during an install or upgrade.</strong></em></td><td>After an operation creates new Start Menu shortcuts, asks what to do with them. <em><strong>Manage Start Menu shortcuts</strong></em> opens the list of known Start Menu shortcuts.</td><td>Windows</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Package update preferences

Conditions for automatic updates and security checks on new versions. The ***Scheduled maintenance*** link at the top of the page opens the update schedules.

### Automatic update restrictions

These only apply to updates installed by the ***Install available updates*** task of [Scheduled maintenance](#scheduled-maintenance), and are locked while that task is off.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Do not automatically install updates when the network connection is metered</strong></em></td><td>Postpones automatic updates on a metered connection, such as a mobile hotspot.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Do not automatically install updates when the device runs on battery</strong></em></td><td>Postpones automatic updates while the device isn't plugged in.</td><td>Windows</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Do not automatically install updates when the battery saver is on</strong></em></td><td>Postpones automatic updates while the battery saver is on.</td><td>Windows</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Update security

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Minimum age for updates</strong></em></td><td>Only shows updates released at least this long ago: <em><strong>No minimum age</strong></em>, <em><strong>1 day</strong></em>, <em><strong>3 days</strong></em>, <em><strong>7 days</strong></em>, <em><strong>14 days</strong></em>, <em><strong>30 days</strong></em> or <em><strong>Custom...</strong></em>. Can be overridden per package manager.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Custom minimum age (days)</strong></em></td><td>Number of days, when <em><strong>Custom...</strong></em> is selected.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Warn me when the installer URL host changes between the installed version and the new version (WinGet only)</strong></em></td><td>On <em><strong>Software Updates</strong></em>, flags WinGet updates whose installer comes from a completely different host than the installed version. This can reveal a redirected or compromised download.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

The minimum age relies on release dates. The ***Release date support per package manager*** table on the page shows which managers provide them (***Yes***, ***Partial*** or ***No***). For managers without release dates, it has no effect. See [Avoid brand-new releases](/unigetui/guides/updates/update-safely.md).

## Scheduled maintenance

When UniGetUI checks for updates, installs them, and backs up your app list on its own.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Tasks run while UniGetUI is running, including from the notification area.
{% endhint %}

### Maintenance tasks

Turn on a task's toggle to enable it and show its schedule. A collapsed task shows its current schedule beside its name.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">TASK</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Check for package updates</strong></em></td><td>Looks for new versions of installed packages.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Install available updates</strong></em></td><td>Updates upgradable packages, respecting the <a href="#automatic-update-restrictions">automatic update restrictions</a>.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Local package backup</strong></em></td><td>Saves your app list to the local backup folder.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Cloud package backup</strong></em></td><td>Saves your app list to your cloud backup.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

See [Run updates on a schedule](/unigetui/guides/updates/schedule.md) and [Choose which apps update automatically](/unigetui/guides/updates/automatic-updates.md).

## Package backup

Saves the list of your installed packages so you can restore them later. A backup contains the package list and installation options, plus ignored updates and skipped versions. It doesn't contain any program files or app data.

### Cloud package backup

Cloud backups are stored in a private GitHub Gist on your account. ***Log in with GitHub*** connects your account; ***Log out from GitHub*** disconnects it.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Periodically perform a cloud backup of the installed packages</strong></em></td><td>Backs up to the cloud on the <em><strong>Cloud package backup</strong></em> schedule of <a href="#scheduled-maintenance">Scheduled maintenance</a>.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Perform a cloud backup now</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Backup</strong></em> uploads a backup immediately.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Restore a backup from the cloud</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Select backup</strong></em> lets you pick a cloud backup and review which packages to restore.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Local package backup

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Periodically perform a local backup of the installed packages</strong></em></td><td>Saves a backup file on the <em><strong>Local package backup</strong></em> schedule of <a href="#scheduled-maintenance">Scheduled maintenance</a>.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Perform a local backup now</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Backup</strong></em> saves a backup immediately.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Change backup output directory</strong></em></td><td><em><strong>Select</strong></em> picks the folder for local backups. <table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTING</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th><th>PLATFORM</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><em><strong>Set a custom backup file name</strong></em></td><td>Name of the backup file. Leave empty for the default name.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Keep a separate file for each backup</strong></em></td><td>Adds the date and time to the file name, so each backup gets its own file.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Maximum number of local backups to keep</strong></em></td><td>Deletes the oldest backups past this limit: <em><strong>Keep all backups</strong></em>, <em><strong>Keep the last 5 backups</strong></em>, <em><strong>Keep the last 10 backups</strong></em>, <em><strong>Keep the last 25 backups</strong></em>, <em><strong>Keep the last 50 backups</strong></em> or <em><strong>Custom...</strong></em>. Only with <em><strong>Keep a separate file for each backup</strong></em>.</td><td>All</td></tr><tr><td><em><strong>Custom maximum number of backups</strong></em></td><td>Number of backups to keep, when <em><strong>Custom...</strong></em> is selected.</td><td>All</td></tr></tbody></table>

See [Back up your app list automatically](/unigetui/guides/new-computer/backup.md).

## Package manager preferences

Also reachable from ***Package Managers*** in the left menu. The page lists the package managers supported on your platform (see [Supported package managers](/unigetui/reference/package-managers.md)), each with a toggle and a status: ***Ready***, ***Disabled***, ***Failed*** (found but couldn't start; check the UniGetUI log) or ***Not found***. Click a manager to open its settings.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/unigetui/reference/settings.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
