# Install UniGetUI

Every way to install UniGetUI on Windows, macOS and Linux, plus silent installer switches, portable mode, updating UniGetUI and uninstalling it.

This page covers every installation method, silent deployment switches, portable mode, how UniGetUI updates itself, and how to remove it. For the fastest path, see [Quick start](/unigetui/quick-start.md).

{% hint style="danger" %}
Only download UniGetUI from [devolutions.net/unigetui](https://devolutions.net/unigetui/), the [official GitHub releases](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases), the Microsoft Store, or the official WinGet, Scoop and Chocolatey repositories. Other sites aren't affiliated with Devolutions.
{% endhint %}

## System requirements

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">PLATFORM</th><th>ARCHITECTURES</th><th>REQUIREMENTS</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Windows</strong></td><td>x64, arm64</td><td>Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable and Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime (the installer adds them if missing).</td></tr><tr><td><strong>macOS</strong></td><td>Apple silicon (arm64), Intel (x64)</td><td>macOS 12 or later.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Linux</strong></td><td>x64, arm64</td><td>glibc 2.27 or later, for example Ubuntu 18.04+, Debian 10+, RHEL 8+ or Fedora 28+.</td></tr></tbody></table>

No separate .NET runtime is needed. UniGetUI also needs internet access to search sources, download packages and check for its own updates, and it only works with the package managers present on the computer (see [Supported package managers](/unigetui/reference/package-managers.md)).

## Installation methods

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">METHOD</th><th>HOW</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Microsoft Store</strong> (recommended)</td><td>Open the <a href="https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/xpfftq032ptphf">UniGetUI Store page</a> and click <em><strong>Get</strong></em>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Installer</strong></td><td>Download <code>UniGetUI.Installer.x64.exe</code> or <code>UniGetUI.Installer.arm64.exe</code> from <a href="https://devolutions.net/unigetui/">devolutions.net/unigetui</a> or the <a href="https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest">latest release</a>, then run it. <code>UniGetUI.Installer.exe</code> is an alias of the x64 installer.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>WinGet</strong></td><td><code>winget install --exact --id Devolutions.UniGetUI --source winget</code></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Scoop</strong></td><td><code>scoop bucket add extras</code> then <code>scoop install extras/unigetui</code></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Chocolatey</strong></td><td><code>choco install unigetui</code></td></tr><tr><td><strong>Portable (.zip)</strong></td><td><code>UniGetUI.x64.zip</code> or <code>UniGetUI.arm64.zip</code>. See <a href="#portable-mode">Portable mode</a>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

The installer asks whether to install for the current user only or for all users, then offers ***Perform a regular installation*** or ***Perform a portable installation***, and the shortcuts ***Create a shortcut on the Start menu*** and ***Create a shortcut on the Desktop***.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">INSTALL MODE</th><th>DEFAULT FOLDER</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Current user (default)</td><td><code>%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\UniGetUI</code></td></tr><tr><td>All users (needs administrator rights)</td><td><code>C:\Program Files\UniGetUI</code></td></tr></tbody></table>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="macOS" %}
Download from the [latest release](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest):

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">MAC</th><th>FILES</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Apple silicon (arm64)</td><td><code>UniGetUI.macos-arm64.dmg</code> or <code>UniGetUI.macos-arm64.tar.gz</code></td></tr><tr><td>Intel (x64)</td><td><code>UniGetUI.macos-x64.dmg</code> or <code>UniGetUI.macos-x64.tar.gz</code></td></tr></tbody></table>

1. Open the `.dmg` file.
2. Drag ***UniGetUI*** to ***Applications***.
3. Open UniGetUI from ***Applications***.

The `.tar.gz` archive contains the app bundle and works without an installer.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Linux" %}
Download the `.deb`, `.rpm` or `.tar.gz` file from the [latest release](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest). Replace `x64` with `arm64` for arm64 computers.

```bash
# Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives
sudo apt install ./UniGetUI.linux-x64.deb
# Fedora, RHEL and derivatives
sudo dnf install ./UniGetUI.linux-x64.rpm
# Any distribution, from the archive
tar -xzf UniGetUI.linux-x64.tar.gz
./UniGetUI
```

The `.deb` and `.rpm` packages install UniGetUI in `/opt/unigetui` and add a `unigetui` launcher.
{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

## Silent installation (Windows)

For scripted or mass deployment, run the installer from an elevated PowerShell session:

```powershell
.\UniGetUI.Installer.x64.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART /ALLUSERS /NoAutoStart
```

Add `/LOG="C:\Windows\Temp\UniGetUI_install.log"` to keep a log. For a full deployment walkthrough, see [Deploy UniGetUI silently](/unigetui/for-it-teams/organization/deploy.md).

### Installer switches

The installer is built with Inno Setup, so the standard [Inno Setup switches](https://jrsoftware.org/ishelp/index.php?topic=setupcmdline) apply.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SWITCH</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><code>/SILENT</code></td><td>Installs without wizard pages; a progress window is shown.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/VERYSILENT</code></td><td>Installs without wizard pages or progress window.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/SUPPRESSMSGBOXES</code></td><td>Suppresses message boxes. Only with <code>/SILENT</code> or <code>/VERYSILENT</code>.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NORESTART</code></td><td>Prevents the installer from restarting the computer.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/ALLUSERS</code></td><td>Installs for all users. Needs administrator rights.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/CURRENTUSER</code></td><td>Installs for the current user only (default).</td></tr><tr><td><code>/DIR="path"</code></td><td>Installs in a custom folder.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/TASKS="list"</code></td><td>Selects only the listed tasks (see below); the others are cleared.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/MERGETASKS="list"</code></td><td>Selects or clears tasks while keeping the defaults. Prefix a task with <code>!</code> to clear it.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/LOG="path"</code></td><td>Writes an installation log.</td></tr></tbody></table>

UniGetUI adds its own switches:

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SWITCH</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><code>/NoAutoStart</code></td><td>Doesn't start UniGetUI at the end of the installation.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoRunOnStartup</code></td><td>Registers the startup entry as disabled, so UniGetUI doesn't start when the user signs in.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoDesktopShortcut</code></td><td>Doesn't create the desktop shortcut.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoVCRedist</code></td><td>Doesn't install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoEdgeWebView</code></td><td>Doesn't install the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoDeployInstaller</code></td><td>Doesn't keep a copy of the installer (<code>UniGetUI.Installer.exe</code>) in the installation folder. That copy is used to repair the installation.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/MSStore</code></td><td>Microsoft Store mode: skips the Visual C++ and WebView2 installers, doesn't start UniGetUI after installation or at sign-in. Combine with <code>/CURRENTUSER</code> for a per-user installation.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoWinGet</code></td><td>Meant to skip installing WinGet and the Microsoft.WinGet.Client module when they are missing. Current installers skip this step anyway, so the switch has no visible effect.</td></tr><tr><td><code>/NoChocolatey</code>, <code>/EnableSystemChocolatey</code></td><td>Deprecated. Accepted for compatibility, no effect.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
With `/NoVCRedist` or `/NoEdgeWebView`, make sure the Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable and the WebView2 Runtime are already on the target computers.
{% endhint %}

### Installer tasks

Use with `/TASKS` or `/MERGETASKS`.

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">TASK</th><th>WHAT IT DOES</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><code>regularinstall</code></td><td><em><strong>Perform a regular installation</strong></em>. Default.</td></tr><tr><td><code>regularinstall\startmenuicon</code></td><td><em><strong>Create a shortcut on the Start menu</strong></em>. Default.</td></tr><tr><td><code>regularinstall\desktopicon</code></td><td><em><strong>Create a shortcut on the Desktop</strong></em>. Default.</td></tr><tr><td><code>portableinstall</code></td><td><em><strong>Perform a portable installation</strong></em>. Can't be combined with <code>regularinstall</code>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Example, all users without a desktop shortcut:

```powershell
.\UniGetUI.Installer.x64.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART /ALLUSERS /MERGETASKS="!regularinstall\desktopicon"
```

### What a regular installation registers

* A startup entry, so UniGetUI starts minimized in the notification area at sign-in (unless `/NoRunOnStartup`).
* The `unigetui://` protocol, used by notification actions and [deep links](/unigetui/reference/cli.md#deep-links).
* The `.ubundle` file association for package bundles.
* An uninstall entry named ***UniGetUI*** in the installed apps.

{% hint style="info" %}
Need an MSI, for example for Group Policy? The [GitHub repository](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI) includes project files to build an MSI wrapper around the installer, in `InstallerExtras/MsiCreator`. The MSI wrapper doesn't install the dependencies.
{% endhint %}

## Portable mode

In portable mode, UniGetUI keeps its settings, caches and backups in a `Settings` folder next to its executable, so you can carry it on a removable drive or copy it between computers.

Portable mode is turned on by a marker file named `ForceUniGetUIPortable` (no extension) next to the UniGetUI executable. Only its presence matters.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}

* **Zip:** extract `UniGetUI.x64.zip` or `UniGetUI.arm64.zip` to a folder your account can write to, then run `UniGetUI.exe`. The zip already contains the marker file.
* **Installer:** choose ***Perform a portable installation*** and a writable folder. Silently:

```powershell
.\UniGetUI.Installer.x64.exe /VERYSILENT /TASKS="portableinstall" /DIR="E:\UniGetUI"
```

{% endtab %}

{% tab title="macOS" %}

1. Extract the `.tar.gz` archive.
2. Create the marker file next to the UniGetUI executable (inside the `.app` bundle): `touch /path/to/unigetui/ForceUniGetUIPortable`
3. Start UniGetUI.

The marker file is removed when an update replaces the bundle. Create it again after each update.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Linux" %}

1. Extract the `.tar.gz` archive.
2. Create the marker file next to the executable: `touch /path/to/unigetui/ForceUniGetUIPortable`
3. Start UniGetUI.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
The folder must be writable by the account running UniGetUI. If it isn't (for example in `C:\Program Files` or on a read-only drive), UniGetUI silently falls back to the regular per-user folder for that session and records why in the ***UniGetUI Log*** (***More*** menu of the sidebar).
{% endhint %}

The first time a new portable copy opens, if a regular installation on the computer has settings, UniGetUI offers ***Import your previous settings?***. Click ***Import***, then ***Restart***. Nothing is overwritten or removed, and the offer isn't repeated.

On Windows, a portable installation doesn't register the `unigetui://` protocol, the `.ubundle` association, a startup entry, shortcuts or an uninstall entry. When it updates itself, it stays portable in the same folder. To turn portable mode off, copy any data you want to keep from `Settings`, delete `ForceUniGetUIPortable` and restart UniGetUI.

### Where UniGetUI stores its data

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">DATA</th><th>REGULAR INSTALLATION</th><th>PORTABLE</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Settings, package options, caches</td><td>Windows: <code>%LOCALAPPDATA%\UniGetUI</code><br>macOS: <code>~/Library/Application Support/UniGetUI</code><br>Linux: <code>$XDG_DATA_HOME/UniGetUI</code> or <code>~/.local/share/UniGetUI</code></td><td><code>&#x3C;install folder>\Settings</code></td></tr><tr><td>Session log, temporary files</td><td>Windows: <code>%TEMP%\UniGetUI</code><br>macOS, Linux: <code>$TMPDIR/UniGetUI</code></td><td><code>&#x3C;install folder>\Settings\Temp</code></td></tr><tr><td>Default local backup folder</td><td><code>Documents\UniGetUI</code></td><td><code>&#x3C;install folder>\Settings\Backups</code></td></tr><tr><td>GitHub backup token</td><td>Windows: Credential Manager<br>macOS, Linux: <code>SecureStorage</code> in the data folder</td><td>Windows: Credential Manager (not moved)<br>macOS, Linux: <code>Settings/SecureStorage</code></td></tr><tr><td>Administrator-protected settings (Windows)</td><td><code>%ProgramFiles%\UniGetUI\SecureSettings</code></td><td>Same (not moved)</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="danger" %}
On macOS and Linux, a portable folder stores the GitHub backup token as a plain file. Protect that folder like the token itself.
{% endhint %}

Portable mode doesn't move the package managers' own data, and packages still install to their usual locations.

## Update UniGetUI

UniGetUI updates itself by default. When a new version is ready, it shows ***UniGetUI {version} is ready to be installed.*** The update runs when you close UniGetUI, or right away with ***Update now***. Before installing, UniGetUI checks the file hash and, on Windows, the Devolutions signature; if a check fails, the update is cancelled.

* **Check now:** in the sidebar, click ***More*** – ***Check for UniGetUI updates***. Up to date: ***Great! You are on the latest version.***
* **Settings:** ***Settings*** – ***General preferences*** – ***UniGetUI updater*** (see [All settings](/unigetui/reference/settings.md#unigetui-updater)).

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">PLATFORM</th><th>HOW THE UPDATE IS APPLIED</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Windows</td><td>Runs the new installer silently and keeps the install mode: current user, all users or portable.</td></tr><tr><td>macOS</td><td>Replaces the app bundle. In portable mode, recreate <code>ForceUniGetUIPortable</code> afterwards.</td></tr><tr><td>Linux</td><td>Replaces the files of the folder UniGetUI runs from.</td></tr></tbody></table>

If you see ***Auto-update is not yet available on this platform.***, no update package is published for your platform or architecture yet: install the new version manually from the [GitHub releases](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest). If an update fails, ***View log*** opens the updater log.

You can also update UniGetUI like any other package with the tool you installed it with:

```powershell
winget upgrade --exact --id Devolutions.UniGetUI --source winget
scoop update unigetui
choco upgrade unigetui
```

## Uninstall UniGetUI

Uninstalling UniGetUI removes the app, not the software you installed with it. Those apps stay and can still be managed with their package manager.

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}

1. Quit UniGetUI: ***More*** – ***Quit UniGetUI***.
2. Open ***Settings*** – ***Apps*** – ***Installed apps***.
3. Find ***UniGetUI***, click ***...*** – ***Uninstall***, and confirm.

Or with the tool you used: `winget uninstall --exact --id Devolutions.UniGetUI`, `scoop uninstall unigetui`, `choco uninstall unigetui`.

**Silently**, with the uninstaller in the installation folder (elevated session for all-users installs):

```powershell
# All users
& "C:\Program Files\UniGetUI\unins000.exe" /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART
# Current user
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\UniGetUI\unins000.exe" /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /NORESTART
```

The uninstaller closes UniGetUI and removes the startup entry, the `unigetui://` protocol and the `.ubundle` association.

**Portable:** quit UniGetUI and delete its folder.
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="macOS" %}

1. Quit UniGetUI.
2. In Finder, open ***Applications*** and move ***UniGetUI*** to the Trash.
   {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Linux" %}

1. Quit UniGetUI.
2. Remove the package: `sudo apt remove unigetui` or `sudo dnf remove unigetui`. If you used the archive, delete its folder.
   {% endtab %}
   {% endtabs %}

### Remove leftover data

Uninstalling keeps your settings, so they come back if you reinstall. To remove everything, delete the items in [Where UniGetUI stores its data](#where-unigetui-stores-its-data), plus, on Windows, the bundled Pinget data in `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Devolutions\Pinget`.

{% hint style="warning" %}
This permanently deletes your UniGetUI settings, per-package installation options and local backups. Copy any backup you want to keep first.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/unigetui/reference/installation.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
