# Quick start

Install UniGetUI and update every outdated app on your computer in about five minutes.

By the end of this page, every app UniGetUI can update on your computer will be up to date. It takes about five minutes.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Install UniGetUI

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Windows" %}
The easiest way is the [Microsoft Store](https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/xpfftq032ptphf). Click ***Get***, then open UniGetUI.

Already comfortable with a terminal? This works too:

```powershell
winget install --exact --id Devolutions.UniGetUI --source winget
```

{% endtab %}

{% tab title="macOS" %}
Download the `.dmg` file for your Mac from the [latest release](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest), open it, and drag ***UniGetUI*** to ***Applications***.

* Apple silicon: `UniGetUI.macos-arm64.dmg`
* Intel: `UniGetUI.macos-x64.dmg`
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Linux" %}
Download the `.deb` or `.rpm` package from the [latest release](https://github.com/Devolutions/UniGetUI/releases/latest), then install it:

```bash
# Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives
sudo apt install ./UniGetUI.linux-x64.deb
# Fedora, RHEL and derivatives
sudo dnf install ./UniGetUI.linux-x64.rpm
```

{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

Other ways to install, including silent deployment and portable mode, are in [Install UniGetUI](/unigetui/reference/installation.md).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### See what's out of date

Open ***Software Updates*** in the menu on the left.

UniGetUI asks each package manager on your computer which of your apps have a newer version. Give it a few seconds the first time.

{% hint style="info" %}
Don't be surprised by the length of the list. UniGetUI also finds apps you installed yourself from a website, not only the ones you install through it. You may even spot apps you forgot you had.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Update everything

1. Select the ***Select all*** check box at the top of the list.
2. Click ***Update selection***.

UniGetUI queues the updates and runs them for you. You can follow the progress at the bottom of the window and keep using your computer in the meantime.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Some installers close the app they update. Save your work in any app on the list before you start.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Hold back what shouldn't change (optional)

If an app must stay on its current version, for example a tool you depend on for work, right-click it in ***Software Updates*** and choose:

* ***Skip this version*** to wait for the next release,
* ***Pause updates for*** to come back to it later,
* ***Ignore updates for this package*** to leave it alone for good.

More options are in [Keep an app on a specific version](/unigetui/guides/updates/hold-a-version.md).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/unigetui/quick-start.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
