# An update or installation fails

Fix an installation, update or uninstallation that fails in UniGetUI, starting with the most common causes.

An operation is marked as failed at the bottom of the window, you get an error notification, or an app stays on its old version after an update.

## Why it happens

UniGetUI asks a package manager to do the job, and the package manager runs the publisher's installer. Most failures come from that chain:

* The installer needs administrator rights, or elevation is blocked.
* The app is running, so its files can't be replaced.
* The package manager is outdated or broken.
* A dependency is missing, or the installer's hash doesn't match what the package manager expects.
* The package itself is broken in its repository.

## Fix it

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Read the error and retry

1. At the bottom of the window, click the output line of the failed operation.
2. Read the last lines: the package manager usually says what went wrong.
3. Use ***Retry***, or the menu next to it:

<table><thead><tr><th width="280">OPTION</th><th>USE IT WHEN</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Retry as administrator</strong></td><td>The error mentions access denied or administrator rights (Windows).</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Force-close app and retry</strong></td><td>The app was running. Only offered in that case.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Retry interactively</strong></td><td>You want to see the installer's own messages and answer its questions.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Retry skipping integrity checks</strong></td><td>The hash doesn't match. Only if you trust the publisher, see below.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="danger" %}
A hash mismatch often just means the publisher replaced the file, but it can also mean the installer was tampered with. Only skip integrity checks for publishers you trust.
{% endhint %}
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Close the app before updating

If the app keeps blocking its own update, tell UniGetUI to close it first:

1. Right-click the package and choose ***Update options*** (or ***Install options***).
2. Open the ***Close apps before installing*** tab.
3. Enter the process names to close, separated by commas. Turn on ***Try to kill the processes that refuse to close when requested to*** if needed.
4. Click ***Save and close***.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Check the administrator settings

In ***Settings*** – ***Administrator rights and other dangerous settings***:

* If ***Prohibit any kind of Elevation via UniGetUI Elevator or GSudo*** is on, operations that need administrator rights always fail. Turn it off, or ask your administrator.
* If ***Delegate package operations to the Devolutions Agent broker*** is on, the Agent must be running and its policy must allow the app. ***Agent broker unavailable*** or ***Operation denied by policy*** point there. See [Install approved apps without admin rights](/unigetui/for-it-teams/organization/devolutions-agent.md).
  {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Test the package manager on its own

Run the same operation in a terminal, for example with WinGet:

```powershell
winget install --id <PackageId> --exact
```

If it fails there too, the problem is the package or the package manager, not UniGetUI. Update the package manager, install any missing dependency the output mentions, or report the package to its maintainers. For WinGet, see [WinGet is missing or broken](/unigetui/help/troubleshooting/winget-missing-or-broken.md).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="info" %}
All past operations, with their full output, are in ***More*** – ***Operation history***. Right-click a failed operation for ***View full log***, ***Copy details*** and the retry options.
{% endhint %}

## Still failing?

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/unigetui/help/troubleshooting/update-or-install-fails.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
