# Configure credentials inheritance on entries in Devolutions Server

Credentials inheritance lets an entry automatically use the credentials defined on its parent folder or entry, instead of storing its own. This reduces duplicate credential management and keeps access centralized at the folder or vault level.

#### Configure the parent folder or entry with credentials

Before child entries can inherit credentials, the parent must have its own credentials configured correctly.

1. In Devolutions Server, select the folder or entry that will act as the credentials source.
2. Open ***Properties***.
3. Go to ***Common*** – ***General*** – ***Credentials***.
4. Select how the credentials are provided in the *****Credentials***** drop-down menu.
5. Enter the credentials to be inherited, depending on what you selected in the *****Credentials***** drop-down menu.

6. Save the folder or entry.

#### Configure inheritance on a child entry

1. Select the entry you want to configure.
2. Open ***Properties***.
3. Go to ***Common*** – ***General*** – ***Credentials***.
4. Select ***Inherited***.

5. Save the entry.

The entry now uses the credentials defined on its parent. Repeat these steps for each child entry that should inherit from the same parent.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/server/knowledge-base/how-to-articles/configure-credentials-inheritance-on-entries-in-devolutions-server.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
