# Application

Configure Remote Desktop Manager application settings for connection delays, online checks, notifications, startup, close, proxy, and recording.

Go to ***File*** – ***Settings*** – ***Application*** to configure the general behavior of Remote Desktop Manager on this computer. The ***Application*** category contains its own settings and the following pages:

* [Action center](#action-center)
* [Application close](#application-close)
* [Application startup](#application-startup)
* [Clipboard](/rdm/ribbon-menu-bar/file/settings/application/clipboard.md), with its ***Advanced*** page
* [Custom variables](#custom-variables)
* [Paths](/rdm/ribbon-menu-bar/file/settings/application/paths.md)
* [Proxy](#proxy)
* [Recording](#recording)

{% hint style="info" %}
Some of these settings can be enforced by a [policy](/rdm/knowledge-base/how-to-articles/apply-policies-gpos.md). They are then disabled in the settings.
{% endhint %}

### Application settings

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTINGS</th><th>DESCRIPTION</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Connection details refresh delay</strong></td><td>Delay, in milliseconds (300 to 2000), before the details panes are refreshed when another entry is selected.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Delay the initial connection</strong></td><td>Delay, in seconds (0 to 60), before the first connection to the workspace. Use this option if the computer is not connected to the network at startup (thin client).</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Connect when available delay</strong></td><td>Delay, in seconds, before the connection times out when using the <em><strong>Connect when available</strong></em> feature.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Open connection delay (after ping)</strong></td><td>Delay, in milliseconds (1000 to 15000), to wait after the ping before opening the connection.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Allow multiple connections (default)</strong></td><td>Select <em><strong>Yes</strong></em> to allow opening multiple connections (tabs) of the same entry. With <em><strong>No</strong></em>, opening an entry that is already open sets the focus on the existing connection. Entries set to <em><strong>Default</strong></em> use this value.</td></tr></tbody></table>

***Is online*** section:

<table><thead><tr><th width="250">SETTINGS</th><th>DESCRIPTION</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Check if the host is online</strong> (check box)</td><td>Ping the hosts of the entries to determine if they are available.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Execute automatic check every</strong></td><td>Run the online check automatically at the specified interval, in minutes (5 to 10000).</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Check if the host is online</strong> (drop-down list)</td><td>Value used by the entries set to <em><strong>Default</strong></em>: <em><strong>On</strong></em> or <em><strong>Off</strong></em>.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Online detection</strong></td><td>Method used to determine if the host is online: <em><strong>Ping</strong></em>, <em><strong>Port scan</strong></em>, or <em><strong>Automatic</strong></em> (port scan and ping).</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Custom variables

Go to ***File*** – ***Settings*** – ***Application*** – ***Custom variables*** to manage the custom variables available in Remote Desktop Manager. Each variable has a ***Name*** and a ***Value***. Use the ***Add***, ***Edit***, and ***Delete*** buttons to manage the list, and the ***Export*** and ***Import*** buttons to transfer variables between computers. See [Manage custom variables](/rdm/knowledge-base/knowledge-base-articles/manage-custom-variables.md).

### Proxy

Go to ***File*** – ***Settings*** – ***Application*** – ***Proxy*** and click ***Proxy settings*** to configure the proxy used by Remote Desktop Manager. Changes are applied at the next restart.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/rdm/ribbon-menu-bar/file/settings/application.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
