# Manage master key

Use ***File*** – ***Manage master key*** to encrypt your SQLite or XML workspace.

The master key prevents unauthorized users to access the workspace without knowing the master key. It is highly recommended to apply a master key to the workspace if you are using Remote Desktop Manager in a portable environment (i.e., USB flash drive, USB hard drive).

If you ever lose your master key, Devolutions cannot recover your data. Make sure to remember your master key or to back it up in a safe place.
