# Vault templates

Use vault templates in Remote Desktop Manager to create new vaults with preset settings and starter entries on SQL Server, Devolutions Server, and Devolutions Cloud.

***Vault templates*** are reusable blueprints for new vaults. A template stores a set of vault settings and, optionally, a starter set of entries. When an administrator creates a vault from a template, Remote Desktop Manager copies those settings and entries into the new vault, so every vault of the same kind starts with a consistent configuration.

Vault templates are managed in ***Administration – System settings – Vault management – Vault templates***, and are supported on SQL Server, Devolutions Server, and Devolutions Cloud workspaces.

Vault templates apply to shared vaults only. The ***User vault*** is configured separately in ***Vault management – User vault*** and cannot be created from a template.

A vault template has two parts:

* **Vault settings**: Templates use the same ***Vault settings*** window used during vault creation and editing, so all vault settings can be preset, from the user interface and connection options to PAM policies, security settings, and documentation. The template's ***Description*** is shown in the ***Vault templates*** list to help administrators pick the right one.
* **Template entries**: Optional entries, such as folders, sessions, credentials, or documents, that are created in every vault built from the template. They can be added one at a time with ***Add – Add entry***, or copied from a shared template group with ***Add – Import from template group***.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/rdm/ribbon-menu-bar/administration/system-settings/vault-management/vault-templates.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
