# Variables

Variables are context-aware values that centralize frequently reused information, making configuration more consistent and easier to maintain.

In Remote Desktop Manager, variables can live in credentials, entries, workspaces, folders, macros, IT assets, contacts, and keyboard shortcuts. Use built-in options or create custom values to prefill fields, standardize naming, and reduce manual edits across a vault. Pair variables with templates and inheritance to propagate defaults safely at scale.

A practical example is setting a folder-level customer or site value and referencing it in child entries for descriptions, credentials, or connection details. Update the variable once and all dependent entries follow, improving accuracy and saving time.
