# Credential management

**Credential management** in the context of privileged access management (PAM) focuses on securing, controlling, and monitoring access to [privileged accounts](https://docs.devolutions.net/pam/concepts/privileged-account/). It involves centralized storage of credentials, automated [password rotation](https://docs.devolutions.net/pam/concepts/password-rotation/), and secure injection into sessions without exposing them to end users.

In Devolutions PAM, credential management is designed to protect high-risk accounts by brokering credentials on behalf of the user. Credentials are stored in encrypted vaults and injected into sessions, minimizing the risk of credential theft. Access to credentials is governed by strict permissions and can be audited for [compliance](https://docs.devolutions.net/pam/concepts/compliance-reporting/).

Credential management can also be extended by integrating external PAM solutions. This allows organizations to leverage their existing infrastructure while still benefiting from secure session brokering and audit trails within Remote Desktop Manager.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.devolutions.net/pam/concepts/credential-management.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
