# Variables

Variables are dynamic placeholders that resolve to context specific values, such as hostnames, usernames, or custom fields, at launch time. They let you build generic templates and scripts that adapt automatically to the selected entry without hardcoding sensitive data.

With a Devolutions Cloud workspace, Remote Desktop Manager supports a dedicated set of variables for entries, credentials, customers, companies, and custom fields stored in Devolutions Cloud. For example, you can reference $CUSTOM\_FIELD1$ or $HOST$ in a script or remote tool and have Remote Desktop Manager resolve the value from Devolutions Cloud at execution time, improving automation and consistency.
